Building a smoker

offset1.JPGoffset1.JPGI am building a smoker need some suggestions on how to apply the heat and smoke. Do I want to build the metal plate under the grill so the heat and smoke have to travel under the meat and then over to the smoke stack? I am fairly new at cooking on a large smoker and any help or suggestions in my build would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
