Pellet Smokers
Posted in BBQ Tips and Tricks on the December 9, 2009
Bill,
I have been considering making the switch to a pellet smoker. I believe you have reviewed and smoked on both the Traeger and FEC100. I was wondering how well the Traeger is insulated compared to the Fast Eddy. It’s my understanding the FEC100 has a remarkable recovery time. How does the Traeger compare? Specifically the Traeger Texas is the unit I am interested in. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dave:
The Traeger Texas is not insulated at all, but is 1/3 the price. The FEC100 is very well insulated. Recovery time after opening is quick with both cookers, but the Traeger Texas has +-15 deg swings while the FEC100 has +-5 degree swings. Be sure to get the digital control for the Traeger. The Traeger also will dump pellets when the lid is open thus producing a very high swing for about 15 minutes after lid is closed. The FEC100 has open door logic which prevents that. We turn the temp down on our Traeger when we open the lid and turn it back up afterwards (if we remember).
At a competition, the ideal setup would be 2 FEC100s. But due to costs and we already had 2 Traegers, we use 2 Traegers and one FEC100. We put chicken and ribs on the Traegers and butts and brisket on the FEC100. This way we have plenty of room if one fails.
Thanks,
Bill
