The Maverick ET-73 is the top of the line barbecue thermometer with all the bells and whistles, but if you don't need all that then this is a very simple, easy to use alternative. When cooking barbecue, you absolutely need to monitor your internal meat temperature. With this thermometer, you just set the desired temperature and insert your probe. When the meat reaches the desired temperature, an alarm goes off. At barbecue competitions, this is what I use because of it's simplicity.
