I want to tell you about Dave and Betty Franks! They are avid readers of my book and barbecue newsletters and two of the
nicest people you will ever meet! They drove down from Tennessee during the Waynesboro,
GA Boss Hog Cookoff a few weeks
ago to show me their new cookbook... "Foods of the Southland". Boy... am I glad they did too! It is chock full of delicious Southern recipes. My wife cooked an apple pie using the recipe
in the book yesterday and it was good enough to make me want to slap my Momma! Of course, I wouldn't tell my Momma that.
And... Dave didn't just slap together a bunch of recipes and manufacture another cookbook. No sirrrrreeeee! All the recipes in "Foods of the Southland" are tried and true and a lot of them
are passed down from generation to generation. Like the ones he got from Grandma Lizzie Johnston.
Here's a little about Dave in his own words...
Hello,
I'm Dave Franks. I was born 77 years ago. I started helping to cook when I was 5 or 6, and I have done a lot since then. I was just the average guy, helping out in the kitchen, for many years.
Then, after flying in Vietnam, and getting shot at going and coming, I decided to get out in 1969. I opened a donut shop in
Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I expanded to a full bakery, then to full restaurants and a wholesale food business and later a grocery store.
Needless to say, I had too many irons in the fire at one time, so I got rid of all of it and started working for my good friend Alex Haley.
Working for Alex I got to meet and cook for a lot of famous people. Just to name a few: John Rice Irwin, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, U.S. Congressman John Duncan, Louis Gossett, Jr., Maya Angelou, Joyce Carol Thomas and even
Oprah Winfrey.
I only cook for the fun of it now. I have a cook-out kitchen that is on wheels. I can Bar-B-Que 24 12lb. Boston Butts at a
time. I can deep-fry cat fish, chicken wings, hush puppies, okra and taters all at the same time and just for the fun of it. NOT FOR HIRE.
